Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been
cleared by the team to return to practice. However, that doesn’t mean
Washington is willing to put him at risk during exhibition contests where there
will be real and uncontrolled contact. Griffin confirmed yesterday that the
Redskins plan to sit him for the entirety of the preseason, according to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com.
The only way that Griffin believes he’ll see time in the
preseason is if “it’s a necessity.” This will ultimately be determined by head
coach Mike Shanahan and the team, and it would seem like after last year’s
criticism for the handling of Griffin during their first-round playoff loss to
the Seattle Seahawks, the team will be extra cautious with their franchise
quarterback.
Griffin recognized the mistake he and the team made, but he
said he feels he’s now on the same page with the organization.
"I think we're all on the same page now," Griffin said. "We all make mistakes -- last season -- we all understand that, we've all talked about it, and it's time to move on. Moving forward and hopefully moving up to the Super Bowl.”
Griffin is also going to slowly get worked into training
camp, as he could miss the first week or two even after being cleared. This is
the route that the Minnesota Vikings took with running back Adrian Peterson
last year, and similarly the Redskins will target a Week 1 return for Griffin.
