Jason Pierre-Paul's status uncertain for Week 1

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is still recovering from back surgery that he underwent back in June to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. While head coach Tom Coughlin said that Pierre-Paul was doing well with his rehab, he didn't give any answers as to whether or not the star defensive end would be ready to go in time for the Giants' Week 1 match up with the Dallas Cowboys, according to NBCSports.com.

Jason Pierre-Paul said he felt about 75 percent healthy. However, Pierre-Paul would not give any answers on when he would be back in action either. He said his goal was to continue with his rehab and return whenever he is ready, rather than rush himself back for the season opener.

"A back is a really, really horrible thing to have, back surgery period, and you don't want to rush back. I'm not concentrating on the first game, the second game, the third game, fourth game, fifth game, sixth game. I'm just trying to come back when I feel like I'm ready to come back" Pierre-Paul told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

Luckily for the Giants, they have a tremendous amount of depth on their defensive line. While Pierre-Paul is out, their starting defensive ends will be Justin Tuck, who can be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, and Mathias Kiwanuka who is more than serviceable. This makes it much easier for the Giants to accept the reality of the situation, and stay on the cautious side. However, they are still hoping Pierre-Paul is ready to come back sooner rather than later, in hopes that their pass rush can be as dominant as it was in 2011, when the Giants won their second Super Bowl in five years.
