Jacksonville Jaguars top signal caller, Blaine Gabbert,
injured his right ankle late in practice on Monday. Florida Times Union’s Ryan O’ Halloran reports
that Gabbert, helped off the field and immediately taken to trainers, suffered
the injury after massive right guard Uche Nwaneri inadvertently hit his ankle
while Gabbert moved in the pocket. There
is no timetable for his return.
Gabbert and QB Chad Henne, who started the last six games of the 2012 season for the Jags, are in a healthy QB competition in this year’s training camp. Jaguars head coach, Gus Bradley, is calling Gabbert’s injury a “sprain.” However, any time away from the team will give snaps to Henne and in the NFL that is a bad thing for any QB who wants to lead their team and be a starter.
Gabbert has not exactly lit it up in the NFL since being drafted No. 10 overall in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He has completed only 53.8% of his passes with 21 touchdowns to 17 interceptions. Gabbert’s lackluster play, ho-hum stats and recent injury could open the door for Henne to win the starting QB job. South Floridians will be keeping watch of this QB competition through their Costa Del Mars as training camp trudges along.
