The Philadelphia Eagles have already suffered their first
significant injury of the season, as the team lost wide receiver Jeremy Maclin
for the season due to an ACL injury. While this could have made Philadelphia a
candidate to add one of the wide outs remaining on the free agent market,
general manager Howie Roseman told reporters yesterday that the team is likely
to replace Maclin from within rather than with someone from outside the
organization, reports Reuben Frank of CSN Philly.
“You look at the good teams in this league, that’s what they do with their players. They develop them, they groom them, then they give them an opportunity. So sitting here, it’s not even August, we have a lot of reps to evaluate our team, and it doesn’t mean we’re not going to look for ways to improve. But at the end of the day, you have to show confidence in the players that you brought in.”
Considering he’s a former first-round pick, some consider
Maclin to have been a bit of a bust during his time with the Eagles. However, Frank
notes that Maclin is only one of 12 receivers in NFL history to catch at least
50 passes for at least 750 yards in each of his first four seasons.
If the Eagles do elect to go outside the organization to
fill the void left by Maclin’s ACL injury, they could look to the likes of
Brandon Lloyd, Laurent Robinson and Randy Moss. All have their drawbacks, so it
makes sense for Philadelphia to first examine their in-house options.
