The ink on Mike Wallace's contract in Miami is barely dry. His 5 year, $60,000,000 deal is one of the most lucrative wide receiver deals in league history.
Since Dolphins sophomore QB Ryan Tannehill started playing pitch-and-catch with his new best friend, rumors have swirled around the league that chemistry just isn't there. Wallace's hands are sloppy and that "it" factor every team hopes for in their $60 million man hasn't shown up yet.
Most recently the Sun Sentinel reports that the man who has earned his paychecks by making corners look slower than Rich Eisen, hasn't broken any ankles this offseason.
I had my doubts about Wallace moving to the AFC East. Ive spent several fall evenings watching Patriots linebackers chase Ben Roethlisberger outside the pocket. Unlike Big Ben, the young Mr. Tannehill is not looking forward to JD Clowney entering the NFL. Tannehill doesn't move outside the pocket as Ben does, and here in lies the Wallace dilemma. Mike Wallace was able to use his speed to break away from defenders because Roethlisberger gave him the time to do so. I'm not sure Tannehill will ever connect with Wallace as Dolphins fans would like him to.
Fantasy Impact: I have Wallace ranked as a high-end WR4. As this news is not necessarily breaking, more analytic, I'm not going to move his name down the board. He had similar risk and upside as a player like Torrey Smith has - I like Torrey more.
(On another note: I don't think any NFL QB is looking forward to JD Clowney going pro.)

It's only day three of training camp. This is what people mean when they say media is to quick to judge ...but on the other hand you Name jd clowney all pro superstar and hof'er before he has played a game. You put to much into training camp, they train at training camp. It's not a game
ReplyDeleteReally? 4th day of training camp and you (and your "sources") have already decided?
ReplyDeleteThis opinion makes me wonder if YOU have earned your paycheck...or is your writing merely sloppy?
The basis for this article is ridiculous. 1st, you are basing the opinion of the entire post on the Sun Sentinel. They have a narcissistic moron as their Dolphins beat writer. 2nd, as the above commenters have mentioned, they have practiced for THREE days. It's just completely ridiculous to say Wallace isn't living up to the hype when...ya know...a game hasn't even been played (regular or preseason).
ReplyDeleteIf you want to knee-jerk every time something happens in camp, I would expect an article tomorrow claiming that Wallace is the best WR in the league because he and Tannehill had a good day at camp today. But that too would be just as baseless.
This is one of the most absurd articles ever written. It's DAY 3 of practice. Your sources, as the other comments have said, appear to be those of the Sun-Sentinel. So sad what has happened to media with the advent of the Internet.
ReplyDeleteI call the sports writters in Miami, "NY want-to-be" They are all in love witht he Jets.
ReplyDeleteagreed this is most absurd article I have read in a long time. My guess is the author is both bored and likely craving attention from his superiors. He is probably one step away from cleaning toilets so feels be better grab attention somehow.
ReplyDeleteAlso to say Tannehill cannot extend plays is even more absurd. he had a better completion % throwing on the run at one point versus being stationary in the pocket. that to me indicates he can in fact buy time.
this writer is still in off season mode.
ReplyDeleteCan we revisit this article now? If anyone still cares. The Dolphins are having a great season but Mike Wallace has only 22 receptions (1 catch per 2 targets), for 281 yards (12.8 avg - career low), and 1 TD through 5 games. Is this what was expected, or did Dolphins fans want more?
