Entering the offseason, there were those that questioned
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach Greg Schiano’s backing of quarterback Josh
Freeman. The team did little to ease this suspicion when it selected quarterback
Mike Glennon in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Still, Schiano told The
NFL Network yesterday that Freeman is the team’s quarterback.
Greg Schiano: We have a quarterback. It is Josh Freeman. He had a really good spring. I am really encouraged. He is going to have a big year
— NFL Media PR (@InsideNFLMedia) July 1, 2013
Schiano added that Freeman had a “really good spring” for
the team. The coach is “really encouraged” by his head signal caller, as he
believes Freeman “is going to have a big year.”
That all sounds nice, but in professional sports teams often
back up their beliefs with money. If Schiano and the Bucs are so behind
Freeman, Pro Football Talk wonders why the team hasn’t signed him to a
long-term extension. Despite Schiano’s comments, it will be interesting to see
how the year plays out and if Freeman is Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback
beyond the 2013 season.
