The Cincinnati Bengals have placed offensive lineman Andre
Smith on the non-football injury list with a calf ailment, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Smith tested free agency over the offseason, but he
ultimately reached a deal to return to Cincinnati after teams weren’t willing
to meet his asking price. He didn’t participate in the Bengals’ offseason workouts,
while he also chose to skip mandatory minicamps.
After being a significant disappointment due to high
expectations following his selection in the first round by the Bengals, Smith
has been able to turn things around. His 2013 campaign isn’t off to the best
start, but assuming the calf injury isn’t extremely significant he should have
time to recovery before much of training camp is missed.
Along with Smith, the Bengals have also placed running back
Cedric Peerman (ankle) on the non-football injury list, as well as long snapper
Bryce Davis (illness). The team made several other moves yesterday, moving wide
receiver Tyrone Goard (finger), fullback Chris Pressley (knee), quarterback Zac
Robinson (elbow) and running back Bernard Scott (knee) on the physically unable
to perform list.
