Falcons sign Matt Ryan to five-year extension

28 year-old Matt Ryan will finally have his payday. After big payouts for his New England, Dallas, Green Bay, and Baltimore counterparts, the football world patiently awaited news of Matt Ryan's extension heading into the final year of his current contract. Ryan's deal is worth $103,750,000 beginning in 2014 and extending through the 2018 season.

Included in his deal is $59,000,000 guaranteed money, and roughly $64,000,000 in the first three years (second highest in the league behind Rodgers).

Matt Ryan was drafted No. 3 overall in 2008 by the Falcons. Ryan has only missed 2 games since joining the team (2009) and has tallied 127 scores. Skeptics will focus on the fact that Ryan has only won one playoff game.

Look for this deal to cause cap issues for the Falcons down the road. Specifically, 2015 will be a challenging year for the front office: Both Roddy White, and Julio Jones will be entering free agency.

Fantasy Impact: Players going into their contract year tend to have more to play off; that being said, I don't believe that Ryan is the type of player to get lazy just because he has some money in the bank. This deal should give a small bump to Julio Jones' and Roddy White's fantasy value. Especially in keeper leagues, knowing Ryan will be throwing the ball to these two studs for (at least) the next two seasons, will only help comfort teams going into the draft.
