San Francisco 49ers wide receiver
Michael Crabtree suffered a torn Achilles tendon in May. While the injury isn’t expected to sideline the talented wide out for the entire 2013 campaign, it’s
likely to keep him out through at least the end of November. As a result, the
49ers are looking for someone to step up and fill in for Crabtree and his
impressive 2012 production. Training camp has yet to begin, but Ricardo
Lockette could be an early favorite, according to The Albany Herald.
Lockette spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks, but he
was ultimately released from the team. The 49ers stepped in and acquired him,
and now he’s pushing for a starting role with the team. What has helped him
through the process is his relationship with quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The
duo are now roommates.
“The first time we met was at the NFL [Scouting] Combine, and I was like, ‘Man, you can throw.’ Then he was like, ‘Man, you are fast,’” Lockette said. “When I texted him last year and told him I was on my way to San Fran, he got really excited. When we saw each other we had this big hug like we grew up with each other.”
This relationship alone won’t give Lockette a starting job,
but it certainly won’t hurt as the 49ers seek a replacement for the injured
Crabtree.
