49ers Marcus Lattimore expects to practice by mid-season

Marcus Lattimore’s 2012 season with South Carolina was cut short due to a significant knee injury. This caused teams to shy away from him in the recent NFL Draft, but the San Francisco 49ers elected to take a chance on the former top prospect in the fourth round. While there is still much to be determined in the recovery process, Lattimore told the NFL Network – quotes courtesy of Pro Football Talk – that he expects to be well enough to start practicing with the 49ers by the middle of the 2013 season.
“I did a lot this offseason,” Lattimore said. “I’ve been running sprints, got a chance to get in there with the guys a little bit — that felt good. I probably won’t do training camp. And I’m on course with the trainer and the doctor to get a chance to practice mid-season and see what happens.”
Lattimore was able to get some work in with the team during recent Organized Team Activities (OTAs), but he expects to be sidelined through training camp and the start of the regular season. San Francisco is expected to place him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

This is of course coming from the player himself, and there’s still a chance that he doesn’t see time with the team at all this season. If he’s able to suit up mid-season, that would put his return at one year, which PFT considers awfully optimistic considering the extent of his injury.
