Vonta Leach, formerly a key part of the Baltimore Ravens
Super Bowl run, is due to be either traded or released by Tuesday, according to
Adam Schefter of ESPN.
After going undrafted in 2004, Leach was signed by the Green
Bay Packers and went on to play three seasons with the Pack. He was talented but
unspectacular, and was released in 2006. The New Orleans Saints picked him up,
but almost immediately cut him as well.
He landed with the Houston Texans in 2006 and began a
successful five year stint with the team. Leach was voted to his first Pro Bowl
in 2011 after paving the way for Arian Foster's breakout season. During the
2011 offseason, Leach signed a three year contract worth 11 million dollars, which
made him the highest paid fullback in the NFL.
In Baltimore, Leach continued his assent to stardom by bulldozing
defenses and clearing the way for Ray Rice. He made the 2012 and 2013 Pro Bowl
teams, and established himself as the best Fullback in the AFC.
Leach seems to have fallen victim to the Ravens roster purge. At 31, the fullback is still at the top of his game and should have a plethora of suitors going forward.
My best bet is that the Chicago Bears will attempt to land him, after letting go of troubled fullback, Evan Rodriguez. Chicago would be a great fit for the big blocker. If they land him, look for Matt Forte to have a stellar season in 2013.
