Jets’ Santonio Holmes could start year on PUP list

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been recovering from a Lisfranc injury – a fracture in his foot – after undergoing surgery to repair the fracture in October. Now, coach Rex Ryan told Seth Walder of The New York Daily News that there’s a chance Holmes starts the season on the team’s physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
“Of course Santonio, we’ll see...he’s doing a decent job but we’ll see how he is for training camp,” said Ryan. “There’s a possibility maybe he starts out on PUP, I’m not sure. Seems to be doing well.”
Following the initial surgery, Holmes also underwent a procedure in February to remove plates from this foot. The ailment is lingering, as Lisfranc injuries are apt to do, and it’s not clear what the Jets’ No. 1 wide receiver’s status will be for the start of the season.

Beyond Holmes, fellow wide receivers Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley and Clyde Gates all missed practice with injuries Wednesday.
