The New York Giants lost starting fullback Henry Hynoski to
a knee injury, and it’s not clear if he’ll be ready for the start of the
regular season. As a result, the team is mulling pursuit of free agent fullback
Vonta Leach, according to The New York Daily News.
Leach was released by the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago.
Initially he appeared set to sign with the Miami Dolphins, but other teams –
including the Giants and Ravens – remain players in the Leach sweepstakes,
according to reports.
At first, the Giants were hoping to use the standard
one-year, veteran-minimum salary to sign Leach. Considering he’s received
attention from other clubs, New York is now considering increasing their offer
for the fullback.
Hynoski’s injury appears to be the driver in this. It has
the Giants considering to increase their offer to Leach, as they are unsure of
Hynoski’s status. At this point, the fullback is expected to miss a majority of
training camp as a result of his MCL injury and a chip fracture to the later plateau
in his knee.
