Houston Texans safety Ed Reed underwent arthroscopic surgery
on his hip last week, leaving the team concerned regarding his return
timeframe. However, owner Bob McNair told reporters – including Tania Ganguli
of The Houston Chronicle – that it was a minor procedure, adding that Reed could
be available for the start of training camp.

McNair added that even if Reed isn’t available for the start
of training camp, he’ll be back in a few weeks at the latest.
While McNair didn’t portray an overly worried owner,
defensive coordinator Wade Phillips admitted to having a “little concern” given
the timing of the procedure.
“If it had been right after the season it’d have been different,” Phillips said. “There’s a little concern but the good thing about him is he’s experienced it before, he’s an experienced guy. You have no problem with him studying or knowing what you’re doing. He’s gonna spend all the time it takes off the field to get ready. I think Ed will be ready when it’s time.”
Reed underwent an extensive physical with the Texans prior
to signing. The hip injury wasn’t something that came up, and coach Gary Kubiak
admitted that the procedure wasn’t expected. However, Houston decided that the
surgery was necessary to get Reed ready to play the season.
