Eagles’ Evan Mathis to miss OTAs after ankle surgery

Yesterday it appeared that the Philadelphia Eagles would potentially be parting ways with former first-overall pick Danny Watkins. Now, it appears Watkins may have a new opportunity following injury news on another Eagles lineman.

Eagles guard Evan Mathis will miss the team’s upcoming OTAs and possibly all of the summer minicamps after undergoing a minor surgical procedure on his ankle, according to Reuben Frank of CSN Philly.

While Mathis could miss the Eagles’ offseason work, he is expected to be 100 percent healthy before the start of training camp in late July or early August. The surgery is said to have cleaned out Mathis’ ankle, as it wasn’t meant to repair any specific injury, according to Frank. Instead, the procedure was elected to address swelling and discomfort Mathis was experiencing.

Mathis was the favorite entering camp to claim one of the two open guard positions over Watkins. Todd Herremans figures to land the other, meaning Watkins was on the outside looking in. He’ll now likely receive reps with the first team during Mathis’ absence.
