Redskins’ Robert Griffin III doesn’t need the preseason

The current goal of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III – who continues to rehab his significant knee injuries – is to be ready for the start of training camp. While this appears to be a realistic target, Griffin told reporters – including Mark Maske of The Washington Post – that he feels confident that he can play Week 1 without taking snaps during preseason games.
“I’ve thought about that and yeah, I would be comfortable with that,” Griffin said after Thursday’s offseason practice at Redskins Park. “That’s all I can say. I have no control over whether I play in the preseason or not. I would be comfortable running out of the tunnel at FedEx Field with the smoke and everything.”
Griffin has been working out on the field, but he hasn’t been a part of the Redskins’ offseason practices. He continues to rehab from knee surgery he underwent in January. He’s hoping to be ready for training camp, which begins July 25.

Coach Mike Shanahan didn’t dismiss statement, but he did say that the quarterback would have to practice with the team before being cleared to play Week 1. While he wouldn’t have to practice against an opponent in the preseason, Shanahan would want his quarterback to get time with Washington’s first-team offense.
