Giants rumors: Hakeem Nicks willing to play out contract

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is entering the final year of his rookie contract, yet most of the attention has been focused on Victor Cruz. Nicks is aware of his situation, but a person informed with his thinking told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that, unlike Cruz, he’s willing to play out his current contract and let the Giants come to him with an offer.
Nicks is probably more interested in pushing back contract extension talks because he is coming off a down year that was marred by injuries. His value is lower than it would otherwise be at this point, but he could send it back up if he’s able to complete a productive and healthy 2013 campaign.

From the Giants perspective this is a bit risky, but New York could still use the franchise tag on his after the 2013 season if they’re unable to reach a contract extension. This would buy the club more time when it comes to negotiations.

New York hopes to keep both Nicks and Cruz. It will certainly be interesting to see how the situation plays out, and if they are able to accomplish their goal.
