It was recently reported that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski would require the fourth surgery on his injured forearm at some
point this week. The Boston Herald confirmed yesterday that the time would be
today, as Gronk is set to go under the knife this afternoon at Massachusetts
General Hospital.

The procedure will provide the Patriots a clearer timeframe
for Gronkowski’s potential return. If the operation reveals that the infection
that’s been in his arm has subsided, he’ll be on pace to return in time for the
start of the regular season, depending on the status of his back. However, if
the infection is found to be lingering, he’ll have to put the replacement of
the plate in his arm on hold, further delaying his return.
It will take doctors roughly a week to test for the
infection. If it’s found to have been defeated, Gronk will be able to have the
plate removed and begin his 10- to 11-week recovery process. As mentioned,
there are also concerns surrounding the tight end’s back, which could further
complicate his status.
