Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski requires back surgery

As expected, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will require back surgery. The procedure is set for the middle of June, and it will keep Gronk out for at least the start of training camp, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com.
Breer adds that Gronkowski’s arm is recovering well, but at about the same time he was undergoing his final surgery his back issue cropped up. He’s dealt with back problems in the past, as they caused him to miss his junior season at Arizona.

While the surgery will cause Gronkowski to miss at least part of training camp, the Patriots were expecting the procedure after the initial findings. Breer also notes that back and spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the operation.

Considering there still isn’t a clear timeframe for Gronkowski’s return, there remains a chance that he could not be ready for the start of the regular season. However, there’s also a chance he will be able to suit up for Week 1. Once the surgery is completed and more is known about the injury a clearer timeframe for return should be presented.
