NFL rumors: Vikings, Jared Allen haven’t talked extension

Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Jared Allen is projecting a strong performance in 2013, even after returning from knee and shoulder surgery at the age of 31. While he’s happy to have a contract, he told Dan Wiederer of The Star-Tribune that he wishes the Vikings would have extended his deal before he reached the final year of the agreement.
“Best-case scenario would have been that we would have never gotten to this point,” Allen said. “Best-case scenario would have been the organization would have gotten something done [on an extension] a few years back. Well ya know what? That’s not the case. And I understand it. … I’m just happy I’m in a spot where both sides are honoring the contract.”
With the new season approaching, it appears that the Vikings will allow Allen to play out his current deal, which will pay him more than $14 million in the final year. It’s unclear where he’ll be beyond the 2013 season, as it could be difficult for Minnesota to re-sign him regardless of his production.

If Allen posts a strong 2013 campaign, he could price himself out of Minnesota. If he struggles, the Vikings could have little incentive to re-sign the aging veteran.
