The Pittsburgh Steelers matched the one-year, $2.5 million
offer wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders received from the New England Patriots
earlier this offseason. He now has one more season with the team before hitting
unrestricted free agency, something that his agent says he’s likely to reach.
For his part, Sanders is excited to return with the
Steelers, and he hopes to be with the team for years to come on a long-term
contract.
"It felt good to be wanted," Sanders said. "But at the end of the day, I'm still a Pittsburgh Steeler. I have one more year here, and hopefully, it can continue into a long-term deal because I want to be here."
While this may be what Sanders would like, his agent –
Jordan Woy – told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently that the wide receiver
is likely to reach the unrestricted free agent market. To avoid this, the
Steelers would have to offer Sanders a “very good deal.”
Sanders has spent his first three seasons in the league as
the Steelers’ third or fourth receiver. Last year, he caught 44 passes for 626
yards and one touchdown.
