NFL rumors: Texans interested in extending Antonio Smith

Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith is entering the final year of his current contract with the team. For his part, he’s hoping it’s not his final season in Houston, and he told Mark Berman of FOX 26 that the Texans are open to signing him to a contract extension.
Smith paired with J.J. Watt last season to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lineman and quarterbacks. The 31-year-old finished the season with seven sacks and two forced fumbles.

This season, Smith will earn $6 million and count $9.5 million against the salary cap. This cap hit could be reduced if he’s able to work out an extension with Houston, something that would seem to benefit both sides if they are interested in retaining him for at least one more season.
