Jets rumors: New York could cut or trade Mark Sanchez

As the new season approaches, most assume that while Geno Smith could eventually take over as the New York Jets' starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez will fill the role to open the year. However, Peter King of Sports Illustrated says that Smith could win the starting job during camp, which could cause the Jets to trade or even cut Sanchez prior to Week 1.

There's talk that the Jets are enamored by Smith, and some have listed the starting job as his to lose. This has led to talk that Sanchez will only be on the Jets' roster to start the season if Smith proves totally incapable of picking up the offense.
Sanchez has certainly had multiple chances to prove himself since being selected in the first round. One way or another, he's unlikely to be a member of the Jets beyond this season, but a factor that complicates matters is the $8.75 million guaranteed to him this year.

To facilitate a deal, New York would have to eat a portion of that remaining salary. If they are willing to do so and find a taker, the Jets could enter the new season with Smith and veteran backup David Garrard as their No. 1 and 2 quarterbacks.

One Response to Jets rumors: New York could cut or trade Mark Sanchez

  1. I think we should keep him for this season and ask him to take a mayor pay cut to reflect his value on the field. He has not performed good enough to be a starting QB so he should take a pay cut or be released. Mark make the decision of your career. Take the pay cut and prove yourself or be released and play out your career out of the NFL possibly.
