The New York Giants and wide receiver Victor Cruz continue
contract extension negotiations. While there are reports that sides could be
nearing a deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com notes that the next few days are “extremely
important” as far as the discussions go.

On #Giants/Victor Cruz: I'm told next few days are extremely important. But Giants do view him as more than a slot WR, value-wise.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 15, 2013
One major piece of the puzzle appears to have been placed,
as Rapoport adds the Giants do view Cruz as more than a slot wide receiver in
terms of his value. This means that he should be able to receive more than the
$6 million annually the Denver Broncos recently gave Wes Welker.
While talks are entering this highly important phase,
Rapoport still hears that nothing is imminent when it comes to a signing. Cruz
hasn’t made any indication that he’ll show up for OTAs, and the next big date
is June 17. That’s when the Giants have the ability to cut Cruz’s $2.8 million
free agent tender to roughly $600,000.
