Falcons rumors: Mutual interest between Atlanta, Richard Seymour

Even after rumors tying free agent Richard Seymour to the Atlanta Falcons recently picked up, the veteran remains unsigned. However, this could change in the next week, as the Falcons have money coming off the books which will offer them more salary cap space to strike a deal with Seymour.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported yesterday that the Falcons have expressed more interest in Seymour than any other team. The defensive tackle has said he’s willing to retire if he doesn’t receive the type of offer that he deems worth it, but he appears to be at least somewhat interested in the prospects of joining the Falcons.

There are several reasons Atlanta could be a prime destination for Seymour. It’s close to his home, and his adopted son has committed to the play for the University of Georgia. He also has tied to Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff from their time together with the New England Patriots.

The Falcons also offer Seymour another shot at competing for a Super Bowl. He would be a significant upgrade for the team, and they will have $6.3 million in cap space when Tyson Clabo’s salary comes off the books on June 1. After that point, a deal between Atlanta and Seymour could be reached.
