Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has reached a one-year
agreement with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Rapoport adds that the deal includes $1.35 million in base
salary, and Asomugha will have an opportunity to earn another $1.65 million in
incentives. The veteran is already set to earn $4 million from the Philadelphia
Eagles after being cut earlier this offseason.
Asomugha was courted by several teams – including the
Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints – but he ultimately decided to join the
49ers.
After signing a big free agent contract with the Eagles, Asomugha
was largely a bust during his time in Philadelphia. He went through a few defensive
coordinators, but he and the rest of the Eagles secondary were torched since
his arrival.
San Francisco has been in the market for a cornerback this
offseason, and the hope is that Asomugha can at least somewhat return to form
and fill in as a competent No. 2 corner.
