Chargers rumors: Is this Philip Rivers’ last chance?

Philip Rivers has been the San Diego Chargers’ quarterback for the past several seasons, and people around the NFL keep waiting for the signal caller to reach elite status. This hasn’t happened, and Kevin Acee of The U-T San Diego believes that next season will be Rivers’ “final audition” for the Chargers.

It might sound crazy to think San Diego would simply cut ties with their quarterback, but the team didn’t restructure Rivers’ contract this offseason despite facing a tight salary cap situation. Acee believes this speaks volumes about the team’s feelings of Rivers, as they may rather allow him to play it out and see how he does than extend him.

Rivers has turned the ball over 47 times over the past two seasons, but he’s also working with a shaky offensive line that resulted in 49 sacks in 2012 alone. While San Diego initially had dynamic playmakers surrounding Rivers, his arsenal of weapons has taken a hit in recent years.
