The Cincinnati Bengals are attempting to re-sign offensive
lineman Andre Smith, but indications are that the two sides are not close to an
agreement at the moment, according to Joe Reedy of The Cincinnati Enquirer.
Entering the free agency period, there were reports that Smith
was seeking a deal that averaged $9 million per year. That won’t happen –
according to Reedy – based on recent deals signed by fellow right tackles.
Gosder Cherilus signed a five-year, $34.5 million contract
with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. Reedy believes Smith will
have a hard time matching this deal, which jumps to $6.3 million per year after
the first season. In Reedy’s opinion, the best deal for both sides would be
something in the range of four years and $26-$27 million with $7-$8 million in
guaranteed money.
