Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Flynn is set to be one of
the highest-paid backups in the NFL. While the Seahawks are open to trading
Flynn, they do not plan on releasing him, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Rapoport notes that the Seahawks maintain that they are
comfortable retaining Flynn as insurance against starting quarterback Russell
Wilson, whose style of play makes him more prone to injury. Wilson is also
inexpensive as he was a third-round pick and is still under the contract he
signed as a rookie.
While the Seahawks do have the luxury of keeping both Wilson
and Flynn on their roster, there is a chance that they are simply posturing in
an attempt to acquire higher compensation for Flynn. If teams thought that
Seattle was likely to cut ties with Flynn, they wouldn’t give up anything of
significance to acquire him.
Rapoport speculates that the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland
Browns and New York Jets could all potentially express interest in Flynn.
