Panthers rumors: Carolina expected to cut Chris Gamble

The Carolina Panthers have been expected to cut ties with cornerback Chris Gamble this offseason, and that remains the case, as Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer told WFNZ-AM that “all indications I’ve received are that he’s gone.”

It doesn't look like Gamble will be returning at a reduced rate, either. "All indications I've received are that he's gone,” Person told WFNZ-AM in Charlotte. "That they've kind of cut bait. ... I've not heard any talk about anything other than a straight cut."

The Panthers are currently $10 million over the salary cap. Gamble’s contract carries with it a cap hit of $10.9 million for 2013, and Carolina can save $7.9 million by releasing him.

Gamble will turn 30 this month. While he was considered one of the top corners in the game as recently as a few seasons ago, he’s missed significant time due to injury in recent years.

Beyond Gamble, the Panthers may consider cutting ties with veterans such as defensive tackle Ron Edwards, while it could also restructure the contracts of linebacker Jon Beason, running back DeAngelo Williams and left tackle Jordan Gross.
