Chiefs rumors: Andy Reid targeting Alex Smith?

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid courted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith last offseason, and he could do the same thing following the 2012 campaign, according to Trent Dilfer of ESPN.

Today, ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said new Kansas City coach Andy Reid, then with the Eagles, expressed interest in acquiring Smith when he was a free agent after the 2011 season. According to Dilfer, Reid “really likes Alex.”

Dilfer notes that there was to some degree a “courtship” between the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid’s former team, and Smith last offseason. While Smith only officially visited the Miami Dolphins before re-signing with the 49ers, Dilfer says that Reid “really likes Alex.”

Last season, the Chiefs went 2-14 behind the quarterback play of Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn. Dilfer believes Smith to Kansas City would be a good move for both sides.

Before his injury and losing his starting job to Colin Kaepernick, Smith completed 70.2 percent of his passes this season for 1,737 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
