Despite the serious nature of Ben Roethlisberger's injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers may get their quarterback back in time for next weekend's re-match against the Baltimore Ravens. Some outlets, like CBS Sports, had predicted Roethlisberger's quick return. Now it seems close to being confirmed.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Big Ben will start throwing (soft tossing really) early in the week. This will be in an effort to test his shoulder and the rib. The team and Roethlisberger need to know what his range of motion is, but it seems the rib may be healed enough to allow him to play.
Roethlisberger suffered the injury two weeks ago. It was initially thought to be just a shoulder injury, but a dislocated rib was diagnosed. The biggest problem with the rib injury was not what had been done to the rib, but what could be done by the rib. According to reports, if hit just the right way, the rib could have punctured Roethlisberger's aorta. Such an injury is unprecedented, so it was not clear how long it would take Roethlisberger to return. It seems a couple weeks may have done the trick.
The Steelers lost their first match-up with the Ravens last week, and they lost back-up QB Bryon Leftwich to an injury of his own. Charlie Batch is starting today as the Steelers try to stay afloat while waiting for Big Ben's return.
Roethlisberger has proven himself as one of the league's most elite quarterbacks. He has two Super Bowl rings, and he has a third Super Bowl appearance. He has 182 touchdowns in his career against just 104 interceptions. And the guy and shake a tackle. Roethlisberger has developed a reputation as being one of the best at improvising broken plays because of his ability to avoid a sack.
The Steelers have certainly missed that in these last two weeks, but hopefully Roethlisberger will be back next Sunday.
