New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes injured his foot
on the first snap of the fourth quarter during yesterday’s 34-0 loss to the San
Francisco 49ers, reports Kareem Copeland of NFL.com:
Holmes caught a short pass from Jets quarterback Mark
Sanchez and turned to make a move.
However, he immediately dropped to the ground after turning awkwardly on
his left foot. Upon falling, Holmes
dropped the ball which was picked up by 49ers cornerback Carlos Rodgers who
returned the fumble 51 yards for a score.
"That's really too bad," Sanchez said. "You'd love him to hang on to the ball, but at the same time, the guy's going down and he hurt himself, kind of assumed the play was over. Just another tough play."
Holmes is set to undergo an MRI today to determine the
extent of his injury. After catching
four passes for 29 yards on Sunday, the 28-year-old now has 20 receptions for
272 yards and one touchdown on the season.
