New York Giants at Carolina Panthers
Sunday September 22nd 1:00 PM (EST)
Line: Panthers by 2.5
Hecker's Record: (3-4)
When the New York Giants march into Bank of America Stadium to take on the Carolina Panthers, you can expect to see a battle of two very pissed off 0-2 teams.
The Panthers put up an admirable effort in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, whom many experts consider to be Super Bowl favorites, but lost 12-7 after a Russell Wilson touchdown pass in the 4th quarter. The Panthers thought they clinched a win last week against the Buffalo Bills when they intercepted a pass late in the 4th quarter from rookie quarterback EJ Manuel, but linebacker Luke Kuechly was called for pass interference. Two plays later Manuel connected with wide receiver Stevie Johnson for the game winning touchdown pass with just seconds remaining in the game.
The Giants were nearly able to overcome five turnovers and get a win against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, but the sixth turnover was the dagger and Big Blue lost 36-31. After playing a very tough first half against the Denver Broncos, the Giants were dominated in the second half and fell to 0-2 with a 41-23 loss in Manning Bowl III.
For this game I expect both offenses to air it out against two of the weakest secondaries in football. Big Blue's pass rush will give quarterback Cam Newton some problems, but it will not be enough to stop the Panthers offense from lighting up the scoreboard. Newton will have a field day picking on the depleted Giants secondary, distributing the football to wide receivers Steve Smith and Ted Ginn Jr. Tight end Greg Olson will also get his fair share of receptions, especially in the red zone.
Eli Manning will lead the Giants on an aerial attack of their own. Victor Cruz will torch the Panthers secondary, and Hakeem Nicks will have a big time game as he returns to Charlotte, the city he called home for most of his life.
At the end of the day, Manning's ability to win close games, and Newtons inability to close games out will be the deciding factors of this game. Both teams will light up the scoreboard, but a late mistake by the Panthers and another two-minute drill from Eli, will seal the deal for this game. The Giants escape Charlotte with a desperately needed win.
Final Score: Giants 31 Panthers 27
