Steelers lose home opener and two starters for the year

The Pittsburgh Steelers preached about an impending change of attitude in their locker room after a lackluster 8-8 campaign last season.

Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season has not been very kind to the men of Steel City.

The road back to becoming an AFC North powerhouse will be far more difficult for Pittsburgh after Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey (torn ACL & MCL) and linebacker Larry Foote (ruptured biceps) both suffered season-ending injuries in week one's 16-9 home loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Pouncey suffered the injury when right guard David DeCastro fell on his right leg during a running play in the first quarter. He was taken to the hospital for an MRI which confirmed that the injury was as bad as it seemed.

Second year guard from SMU Kelvin Beachum took over for Pouncey at center.

As for Foote's injury, the Steelers lack depth at the inside linebacker position with rookies Vince Williams, Terence Garvin and third-year man Kion Wilson. Wilson took over for Foote after he left the game.

In a post-game interview with the media via Steelers.com, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media that Maurkice Pouncey and Larry Foote's injuries would require surgery. When asked if their season was presumably over, Tomlin reiterated,

"I would assume so, but that's an assumption at this point."

The Steelers will hit the road next week for a battle with division rival Cincinnati on Monday night. If Pittsburgh doesn't want to start 0-2 and put Tomlin on the hot seat, the young replacements need to step up to the curve and do it fast.
