There has been talk for some time that Josh Freeman is not Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano's guy. Schiano has denied that he is considering making a change at the quarterback position, with the latest such talk coming as recently as Sunday. However, it appears Tampa Bay is prepared to move in a different direction, as ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the Bucs have replaced Freeman with rookie Mike Glennon.
The move is not totally surprising considering all the speculation that has surrounded Freeman and the start that the Bucs have gotten off to. Still, the timing of the decision is shocking considering Schiano had not led on that a switch was coming.
For Glennon, it's a chance to show what he can do in the NFL, and it gives Tampa Bay time to see what they have. He was selected in the third round, but some analysts thought he deserved to go a bit higher in an overall weak quarterback class. Whatever the case, Glennon is not viewed as a potential franchise quarterback, but where he was selected should take some pressure off of him and the Bucs to deliver immediately or turn out amazing results.
For Freeman it's basically the worst-case scenario. He's in the final year of his current contract, and even if his road was ending in Tampa he still had a shot to earn a nice payday on the free agent market if he was able to turn in impressive totals. Instead, the 25-year-old has limped out of the gate for an 0-3 start, posting a quarterback rating of only 59.3.
