Cadence Call: New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills Week 1 game preview

Welcome to Cadence Call, your weekly game preview where I give you a bootleg breakdown for each team in the AFC East & AFC North divisions.  I can say with 100% certainty that two things are going to happen this Sunday.  One, my wife is going to bellow at me for guzzling too much beer, doing too many shots of Patron and smoking too many cigars and two, the New England Patriots are going to beat the Buffalo Bills.

Cadence Call regular season record (0-1).  Now, on to the game preview.

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills (Sunday Sept 8, 1:00PM ET)

*Line: New England -10½

A new era begins in Orchard Park, NY this Sunday when head coach Doug Marrone and quarterback E.J. Manuel debut against their AFC East rival New England Patriots.  Unfortunately, the Bills’ fans will be crying in their garbage plates because the result will be the same.

The Pats have skinned the Bills over the past decade to the tune of Bill Belichick being 23-4 and QB Tom Brady being 20-2.  After Sunday, add another win to each.

The Pats are -10½.  A large margin, but have a few pints of Guinness and a couple of Macanudo Maduros and take the mighty Patriots minus the points and watch TB12’s crew shine through the gray clouds that will not leave Western New York until next April.

The Patriots’ offense has new players in wide receiver Danny Amendola and young rookies such as WR Kenbrell Thompkins and tight end Zach Sudfeld.  The safe bet is that TE Rob Gronkowski will sit this one out but one never knows with the Patriots.  Either way, the offense is still run through Brady who will be handing off to an experienced Stevan Ridley.  In addition, watch out for RB Shane Vereen to be catching passes out of the backfield, in the slot or even split out wide.

Bills RB C.J. Spiller is the real deal but he will have trouble running the ball against the Patriots’ defensive line anchored by Vincent Wilfork.  The area of concern for the Pats is the short and medium range passes to the middle of the field.  This is an area of concern for the Patriots going on a few seasons and they continually fail to correct it.  Rookie linebacker Jamie Collins was drafted to fix this issue but he is a work in progress.  If Spiller, Scott Chandler and Donald Jones get it going, it will be a longer day for the defense than necessary.  However, Manuel is a rookie and his inexperience going against Belichick’s experience should negate the middle of the field muddle the Pats may experience.

With all that being said this game is won or lost with Brady.  As we trip on the sands of time, Brady owns them.  Brady has found the “fountain of youth” and has never looked better.  He commands the offense with laser precision and Brady can do more with less than any QB in NFL history.  He is a superstar and a Hall of Famer and we all will see that on Sunday.

I am concerned about the weather.  The game time temperature of 63°F is of no concern but the possibility of moderate to heavy rain may slow down Brady’s aerial assault.  This might be a short pass, run in the muck dump fest.  Either way, time will stand still in Orchard Park, NY as Brady’s bunch continues its dominance of the Bills.

Take the Pats minus the points with some Shepherd’s Pie and watch as they crush the wagons that always seem to circle the Buffalo Bills, 35-20.
