Cadence Call: Miami Dolphins at Cleveland Browns Week 1 game preview

Welcome to Cadence Call, your weekly game preview where I give you a bootleg breakdown for each team in the AFC East & AFC North divisions.  What we have here is what I call a “commercial” game.  A "commercial" game is a game I will switch to during a commercial break of the game I am watching just to see that game’s progress.  It is not a bad thing.  It just means that the commercial game is of slightly less importance than my main game.  Besides, it maximizes football-viewing pleasure and infuriates the wife.  Now buckle those chin straps and grab your pints and let the Pop Warner pee-wees get you your chips and dip.  Enough wind bagging, let us get this train rolling.

Cadence Call regular season record (0-1).  Now, on to the game preview.

Miami Dolphins @ Cleveland Browns (Sunday Sept 8, 1:00PM ET)

*Line: Browns -1½

A new era begins in Cleveland on Sunday with a new coaching staff in head coach Rob Chudzinski, offensive coordinator Norv Turner and defensive coordinator Ray Horton.

These two teams are as evenly matched as any two teams in the NFL in Week 1.  Vegas have the Browns -1½ and the weather should be slightly cloudy and 70°F and should not be a factor.  For me, this game is a pick’em.

I think this game comes down to two players and how each performs will dictate which team wins the game.  Browns running back Trent Richardson and Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace are the two players to watch in this “commercial” game.  Richardson is finally 100% healthy and he will need to be because he is the feature back and the Browns have only Bobby Rainey as the No. 2.  Richardson will have to contend with a Dolphins defense anchored by Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon and rookie Dion Jordon.

If Richardson can come up big pounding the pigskin, gaining yards and putting up a couple of sixes on the scoreboard, the Browns have a chance at winning this game.

The other side of this IHOP flapjack is that the Browns need to stop WR Mike Wallace.  Wallace signed a huge deal in the offseason with the Fish and he will look to have even a bigger debut come Sunday.  If he does, the Browns will be playing catch up and that cancels out Richardson.

Can you feel the symmetry here folks?

There is only one player on the Browns who can match Wallace and that is cornerback Joe Haden.  Haden will have all he can handle with Wallace.  To win this battle, Haden needs to be all over Wallace like ants on a half-eaten tootsie roll.  If Haden can do that and shutdown Wallace, Richardson will get more touches and the Browns will control the clock.

It is coming full circle now.

Broken down into pieces like a game of Jenga, this contest is really only about two players.  Who has the more productive Sunday, Richardson or Wallace?  Richardson must abuse the Miami defensive line and Wallace must contend with Haden on every play.

This game is a pick’em in my book.  I think Haden is good enough to shut down Wallace and Richardson will have enough this week to wear down the Dolphins' defense.  This game calls for a case of Carib and a Nording cigar.  Have that and watch this game in its entirety or during your commercials to see the Browns make Dolphins’ fans cry, winning this one 23-17.
