Philadelphia Eagles tight end James Casey exited last night’s
preseason finale against the New York Jets after suffering a hamstring injury,
according to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Casey sustained the injury during the first quarter of the
game, after which he didn’t return. It concluded a disappointing preseason for
Casey, who has battled injuries throughout training camp and only caught two
passes for 10 yards over the team’s four exhibition games.
It looked like Casey was slated for a larger role with the
Eagles after signing as a free agent from the Houston Texans. The tight
end/H-back inked a three-year, $12 million agreement, and he seemed to be a
dynamic option out of the backfield or lining up at tight end in head coach
Chip Kelly’s system.
However, before he’ll be able to do much of anything, Casey
must first get back to full health. He missed most of the spring after
undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. It’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined by
his hamstring ailment, but more should be known by the weekend.
Philadelphia is deep at the tight end position, as they are bringing
back Brent Celek and welcoming second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft Zach
Ertz.
