Following Robert Griffin III’s announcement that he was
cleared medically to return to play, fans of the Washington Redskins were
likely hoping to be out of the woods concerning the drama and intrigue
surrounding the starting quarterback’s surgically-repaired knee.
Not so fast.
Following the news of Griffin’s medical clearance, head
coach Mike Shanahan told reporters that Dr. James Andrews, who’s been working
with RGIII from the time of the injury through his rehab, has concerns
involving his return. This was initially taken as a sign that the renowned
surgeon was concerned with the status of Griffin’s knee, but Trey Wingo of ESPN
reported yesterday that Dr. Andrew’s concern has less to do with the health of
the quarterback and more on how the Redskins plan on using him.
Sources telling me the "concerns" about @RGIII have less to do with health of the knee, much more on how the team plans to use him

Later yesterday afternoon, Chris Russell of ESPN 980 said
that Dr. Andrews sent him a text saying that Griffin in “in their hands,”
referring to the Redskins. Dr. Andrews did add, “they will take good care of
him.”

There has been talk that the Redskins could take a more
conservative approach when it comes to Griffin, limiting his running so as to
avoid another significant injury. Of course, you can only do so much to avoid
injuries, and there is contention that limiting RGIII will turn him into a
shell of the dynamic signal caller we all witnessed last season.
It’s not clear if this exchange means anything, as Andrews
himself has said little on the topic since the clearance. Following the long
offseason of coverage surrounding Griffin, it’s exciting that in just over a
week he’ll be back on the field showing us what he can do.
