When Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb suffered his
concussion earlier this preseason, there was talk that it could ultimately end
his playing career. While Kolb has since said that the head injury won’t force
him into retirement, it has ended his season. The Bills announced yesterday
that Kolb has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, according to NFL.com.
While most teams might be more willing to give a player time
to show he can recover from a similar head injury prior to designating him to
IR, Kolb’s history of concussions resulted in a swift decision from the Bills.
The signal caller struggled to return from a concussion last season as a member
of the Arizona Cardinals, and he has a long history of head injuries dating
back to college.
Kolb entered training camp in a heated competition with
rookie EJ Manuel for the Bills’ starting quarterback gig. Both Kolb and Manuel
have since battled injuries, and Buffalo is now slated to start undrafted
rookie Jeff Tuel Week 1 against the New England Patriots. That could change if
Manuel proves healthy by next weekend, but that is not a guarantee at this
point.
