In anticipation for the Tuesday 3 pm deadline, where all NFL teams must get their rosters down to 75 players, the Houston Texans cut eleven players on Monday and are now down to 78 players on their roster. They will need to waive three more players by Tuesday afternoon. Here is a list of the players Houston has waived so far.
According to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, the Texans cut: quarterback Stephen McGee, running back Ray Graham, fullback Zack Boren, tight end Adam Schiltz, guard Bryan Collins, tackle Nick Mondek, defensive end Nick Okine, cornerback Travis Howard, linebacker Elliot Coffey, linebacker Ja'Gared Davis, and punter Andrew Shapiro.
These rosters cuts aren't a surprise considering all of the players released spent the preseason at the bottom of the team's depth chart. The only players from this list with previous NFL experience are Stephen McGee and Nick Mondek.
McGee spent some time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2011 and 2012 before being released, and Mondek was select by the Texans in the sixth round last year and spent most of the season on the practice squad.
As the team's fourth quarterback, McGee did not throw a pass in the preseason. Graham showed some potential in limited action, rushing for 29 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts, and Schiltz caught two balls for 15 yards.
The strongest performer out of this group is arguably, punter Andrew Shapiro. Shapiro punted eleven times in the preseason with a 42.6 yard average, pinned six punts inside the 20, and recorded a long of 59 yards. Unfortunately for the rookie punter, he was working behind seven-time Pro Bowl punter, Shane Lechler. Shapiro should get picked up by a team looking for a punter.
The Texans will have to waive three more players by this afternoon. However, the tough cuts come before Saturday when the team has to get down to their final 53-man roster.
