Texans' DeAndre Hopkins cleared to return and could play tonight

Houston Texans rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins left last Saturday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins early with a concussion. For a majority of the week Hopkins was in phase 1 in the recovery process, but according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli, Hopkins has been moved up to phase 4 of the recovery process and has was cleared to play on Tuesday.

This comes as good news for a Texans team that will be relying heavily on the first-round pick to help take Houston passing game to the next level. Hopkins has showed some promise this summer. He recorded 22 yards on two catches against Miami before leaving the game after taking a hit running across the middle of the field.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound receiver offers a different skill set at receiver than the towering Andre Johnson. Hopkins runs crisp routes and offers some potential as a possession receiver. At best, Hopkins prevents opposing defense from favoring their coverage towards Johnson.

Johnson has been the only consistent threat in the Texans passing game for years now. Tight end Owen Daniels has served well as the team's second leading receiver, but the lack of additional weapons at receiver, has stalled the Texans passing game at times.

Even if the rookie receiver sits out tonight's preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys, Hopkins fast recovery from the concussion is a promising sign he'll be ready to go for the season opener.
