According to a team's press release, the Indianapolis Colts have released eleven players on Sunday and placed outside linebacker Lawrence Sidbury on injured reserve. The NFL requires all teams to be down to 75 players on their roster, and with the roster moves over the weekend, the Colts are now down to 78 players on their roster. This means they will need to release three more players by Tuesday afternoon.
Here is a list of the players the Colts cut on Sunday: kicker Brandon McManus, center Rick Schmeig, guard Danous Estenor, running back Davin Meggett, wide receiver Maurice Williams, defensive tackle Kellen Heard, linebacker C.O. Prime, safety Ashante Williams, and cornerbacks Johnny Adams, Allen Chapman, and Teddy Williams.
Davin Meggett and Teddy Williams spent time last season on the Colts' practice squad. Williams was even called up from the practice squad and saw action on defense and special teams in seven games.
Heard is the only other player on this list that had previous playing experience with Indianapolis. He was signed as a free agent toward the end of the season last year and played a reserve role at linebacker.
Sidbury was signed in the offseason from the Atlanta Falcons to bring depth to the Colts' outside linebacker position, but Sidbury suffered an undisclosed shoulder injury during the team's second preseason game against the New York Giants and was placed on injured reserve on Sunday.
The linebacker's loss isn't major for the team. The Colts already looked deep at outside linebacker with Pro Bowler Robert Mathis and newly acquired veteran free agent Erik Walden manning the two spots on the outside. The team also drafted intriguing pass rushing prospect Bjeorn Werner out of Florida State in the first round. Also, reserve outside linebacker Caesar Rayford has ad a good preseason, recording five sacks in three games.
The Colts will have to cut three more players today, and then comes the hard part when the team has to get down to 53 players on Saturday. Thursday's preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals will be the last chance for players to make their case for a roster spot.
