Bills’ Jeff Tuel to start Week 1

If the road to the Super Bowl was not hard enough, the Buffalo Bills announce that rookie quarterback, Jeff Tuel, will start Week 1 against the New England Patriots and somewhere, in the hallways underneath Gillette Stadium, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick look at each other and just smile.

Josh Alper of NBCSports reports that Bills head coach, Doug Marrone, feels the best option right now is to start the unproven, inexperienced rookie Tuel against the weathered Patriots Week 1.  This move was dictated by the injuries to QBs E.J. Manuel (knee) and Kevin Kolb (concussion).

The Bills recently signed QBs Matt Leinart and Thad Lewis.  However, Tuel is more familiar with the offense and has had preseason reps under center.  Coach Marrone did acknowledge that starting Tuel was not his first choice stating that, “obviously this wasn’t the plan” for 2013.

Tuel is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Washington State with career college stats that are nothing to write home to mom about throwing for 5,932 yards for 33 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

I beleive that if somehow Manuel is even remotely ready to go, Tuel becomes No. 2.  However, the Bills are in a tough spot and are trying to play the hand they were dealt with the cards they were given.  However, it does not help that sitting at the table is Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.
