New Orleans Saints linebacker Martez Wilson will miss two to
four weeks as the result of a left elbow injury, according to Larry Holder of
NOLA.com.
Wilson exited yesterday’s practice session after trying to
make a tackle in the backfield. He left the field with a trainer holding his
left arm. Holder notes that the linebacker will be missing critical time during
training camp as New Orleans attempts to make the switch to the 3-4 defensive
scheme.
Still, Wilson is expected to return in time for the start of
the regular season. Victor Butler’s season-ending ACL tear opened things up for
Wilson to claim the Saints’ starting job at strongside outside linebacker.
Saints head coach Sean Payton told reporters that Chase
Thomas and Eric Martin will receive additional reps due to Wilson’s absence.
"(Chase Thomas and Eric Martin) are getting their reps," Payton said. "We're going three groups right now, so a lot of these guys are getting plenty of work. At some point -- 2-3 weeks from now -- we'll reduce those reps."
