Percy Harvin placed on PUP with hip injury, may need surgery

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll announced on Thursday that newly acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin suffered a hip injury during a workout last week.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that Percy Harvin may have a slight tear in his hip and is awaiting a second opinion next week. If surgery is indeed necessary for Harvin, he will be out for an extended period of time. Even if the star wide receiver does not need surgery he will still need some time off to rest his hip regardless.

The good news for Percy Harvin and the Seattle Seahawks is that the injury happened at the start of training camp rather than during the regular season. Had the injury occurred during the regular season Harvin would definitely be missing some playing time. However, it is still a cause for concern in Seattle that Percy Harvin has already suffered an injury this early in the 2013 "season". Harvin's speed makes him a very dynamic player. He can kill defenses when he lines up in the slot and he is very dangerous in special teams as a punt/kickoff returner. Unfortunately, the most dynamic players in the league also tend to be the most injury prone. Harvin was having a great 2012 season until it was cut short by an ankle injury he suffered in week 9. The Seahawks believe that Percy Harvin was one of the few missing ingredients in their recipe for a Super Bowl championship. If they hope to compete for the Lombardi trophy this year, they will need Harvin back on the field as soon as possible.
