When the Detroit Lions made running back Jahvid Best their
first-round draft pick in 2010, the team had high hopes for the talented ball
carrier. Unfortunately, those plans were stalled by a concussion Best suffered
in 2011 and continued to feel the effects of last year. Detroit ultimately
decided to part ways with Best yesterday, cutting the running back, according
to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
Best appeared to be a rising start following his rookie
season, during which he recorded 1,042 yards from scrimmage, caught 58 passes
and scored six touchdowns. However, he was largely limited by a concussion and
its effects over the next two seasons.
While he hasn’t officially announced his retirement, it
appears that’s the direction Best is heading.
"My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life," Best said in the team-issued statement. "My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I'll always be a Lion."
The Lions released the following statement regarding Best:
"Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with," Martin Mayhew, the Lions’ executive vice president of football operations and general manager, said in a statement released by the team. "He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him."Follow @TheNFLInjuryRpt
