The New York Jets receiving corps is relatively young and
inexperienced. This fact is only made more evident when you subtract Santonio
Holmes from the equation. Unfortunately for the Jets, it appears they’ll have
to do just that through the start of training camp, perhaps even into the start
of the regular season, according to Seth Walder of The New York Daily News.
At this point, Holmes isn’t willing to put a timeframe on
his return. It looks increasingly doubtful that he’ll be participating in training
camp anytime soon, and his status is very questionable for New York’s Week 1
contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I don’t have a target date,” said Holmes at uSTADIUM’s Flags for Foundations flag football tournament on Roosevelt Island Saturday. “I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize myself being ready for the season.”
Walder notes that it doesn’t sound like Holmes has done
anything close to running fly routes at full speed. The veteran wide out
continues to run on a non-weight bearing treadmill roughly three times per
week. He’s also participated minimally in football-related activities.
“It’s just getting back into the swing of walking and running without any pains from having scar tissue build up around the injury,” said Holmes. “It’s really difficult to learn how to walk again. To do so much balance work, you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. To lose a ligament and have separation in your joints, have screws placed in.”
Holmes continued to say that he has no plans on rushing
himself back from his Lisfranc injury, as he wants to ensure that he is fully
ready to return when that happens. At this point, it’s hard to say exactly when
that will be.
