The New York Giants were confident that they’d sign wide
receiver Victor Cruz to a contract extension prior to the start of the season.
While the process was dragged out through the offseason, a deal was finally
reached between Cruz and the Giants, as the team announced yesterday that the
wide out received a five-year, $43 million extension.
The extension will be added to Cruz’s current one-year,
$2.879 million contract. He receives $15.6 million guaranteed from the deal.
According to sources, this deal was the same one Cruz received when he signed
his free-agent tender on June 14. New York didn’t change their offer to Cruz
during that time period even though training camp was approaching.
With Cruz in the fold, the Giants can turn their attention
to fellow wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who is approaching the free agent market.
Nicks doesn’t want to talk contract until at least next season, and if New York
is unable to reach an agreement with him the franchise tag will be an option.
